South Tyneside maternity services will be changing; as of late summer 2019, becoming a free-standing midwifery-led birthing centre open 24/7. Antenatal and postnatal appointments will still take place locally. Obstetricians and other health care professionals will visit the midwifery-led birthing centre during clinic hours.

You can contact your family doctor, (your G.P. ) in the first instance and make an appointment to see the midwife. If you experience any problems contacting a midwife you can contact your chosen maternity unit for information.

By Metro: The nearest metro station to the hospital is ‘Tyne Dock’. There are two bus stops on Harton Lane.

By Bus: The following buses are accessible from these bus stops: - 10, 11, 12, 13, 14, 526, 528, 533, 544 and x50.

Car Parking: The car parks at South Tyneside District Hospital When parking on site please ensure you park in a public/visitor car park (not staff) and pay for the appropriate amount of time you will be on site. Clear signage is installed throughout the car parks and entrances.

Disabled Parking: Disabled parking is available free of charge for Blue Badge holders in designated ‘disabled’ spaces in our hospital car parks.
